The Guilty Remnant, a cult dedicated to reminding the world of the Departure, claim the Well as a sacred site. They stage silent protests around its mouth and use it as a dumping ground for personal belongings—wedding rings, family photos, children's toys—that people cling to as distractions from the loss. For them, the Well is a physical representation of the emptiness that everyone should be confronting, a hole in the earth that mirrors the hole in the world.

In Their Own Story

The Well is first introduced when Kevin Garvey, the Mapleton police chief, investigates reports of strange activity in the woods. He finds members of the Guilty Remnant standing silently around the Well, holding signs that read 'STOP WASTING YOUR BREATH.' Later, Kevin's father, who suffers from dementia, is found wandering near the Well, claiming he hears voices from its depths—whispers that only he can hear. The Well becomes a haunting backdrop for the family's unraveling, as Kevin himself is drawn to its edge, staring into the darkness and contemplating the void, wondering if something—or nothing—waits below.
